The Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL), has signed a partnership with Africell Mobile company in Freetown, geared towards the development of mobile and sports journalism while bringing happenings of sports events to the doorsteps of Africell subscribers nationwide.
Highlights of the MOU include the unveiling of the 392 shortcodes that Africell customers countrywide can subscribe to for the latest daily local sports updates at the cost Le 300 by easily sending a text message with the world SUB to 392, Africell committing to sponsor the Annual SWASAL Sports Awards, let SWASAL make use of Afri-Radio as the hub to provide live commentaries of matches as well as Africell to be supporting SWASAL members to cover international tournaments.
SWASAL President, Sahr Morris Jr. says the time is now for his membership to utilize their potentials to the fullest in the era of mobile journalism noting that the collaboration with Africell and SWASAL is a renewal of their long-standing relationship established over the years, which have in diverse ways contributed greatly towards the activities and programs of his Association, and the upliftment of sports journalism in the country.
He added, “the Local Sports Updates platform which is now up and running will further bring sports to every Sierra Leonean, using Africell at the same time will help boost the SWASAL membership and increase the spread of information about sports to a wider audience apart from the traditional media platforms (Radio, Newspaper, Online, and Television).
With this partnership today, I can authoritatively confirm that we (SWASAL) will be reporting exclusively on the latest happening in sports which will further contribute to the development of sports in our nation.”
The Chief Corporate Affairs Manager at Africell-Sierra Leone, Joe Abass Bangura, says he is looking forward to seeing SWASAL through the 392 latest sports updates platform be updating their Africell Subscribers about past, present and future events in all sporting disciplines as well as providing Sierra Leoneans back home with all the happenings from the Leone Stars camp and on the pitch while they will be in Cameroon next year to compete alongside twenty-three (23) other nations in the delayed 2021-Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking at the event also was the President of SLAJ Ahmed Sahid Nasralla who distinctly urged SWASAL to make good use of the partnership with Africell while upholding the much-needed professionalism in their reportage in the daily discharge of their duties as sports reporters.
President Nasralla further underscored that "there is a strong bilateral tie between the Media In Sierra Leone and the telecommunication company (AFRICELL). "Even before the outbreak of COVID-19 Africell has been supportive to the media and I'm elated as President of the elite parent Association for Journalists in Sierra Leone to see a transformed and lasting partnership between SWASAL and AFRICELL.”
