The President of Sierra Leone His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has recorded yet another successful accolade to his name, his Sierra Leone People’s Party-led government, and for the people of Sierra Leone with a five-year mandate at the African Union.
At the ongoing 38th Session of the African Union Summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Sierra Leone has been elected a member of the African Union Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The African Union Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, established in July 2001, is mandated by the African Union to monitor the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights of Children on the continent.
Under the astute leadership of President Bio, Sierra Leone secured 77.6 percent of the total votes cast against its opponent Benin, who managed to gain a mere 22.4 percent of the votes. This is the first time the country has attained such glory in the Expert Committee’s 24 years of existence.
It could be recalled that President Bio’s dedication and commitment to ending historic injustice for both Africans and his beloved country, Sierra Leone, have no limitations. It started at the United Nations, where the young, vibrant president advocated for a rebrand of the entire setup of the United Nations Security Council, urging for more permanent seats for the continent, which received many commendations from other African leaders and heads of governments.
At the ongoing 38th Session of the African Union Summit in the Ethiopian Capital Addis Ababa, Sierra Leone’s candidate for the AU Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, Mr Joseph Sunday Sinnah, was subjected to go through four rounds of a democratic process, the blessing of the present face of Sierra Leone, President Bio, he was able to secure 38 votes against Benin, which got 11 votes.
With this win, Sierra Leone is now eligible to monitor, supervise, and receive reports from five member states on their implementation and obligation on the African Charter on the Rights of the Child in the Continent. However, in the interim, where there is a violation in the implementation, Sierra Leone’s candidate and other members of the committee are required to investigate and present a report to the African Union for action on their findings.
