Sierra Leone validates its Digital Development Policy with partners

The Ministry of Information and Communications has engaged stakeholders from Government, Academia, Civil Society Organizations, MNOs, Private Sector Players, and a host of other stakeholders at a one-day validation workshop of the draft National Digital Development Policy (NDDP) on Tuesday, 26th October 2021, at the Radisson Blu Mammy Yoko Hotel in Freetown.

Opening the workshop, the Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, expressed thanks and appreciation to Smart Africa for supporting his ministry, and the government as a whole is putting together a National Digital Development Roadmap that will help guide the country as to where it is going in digital transformation.

The Minister said that the goal of the Policy is to create the enabling environment upon which national digital transformation initiatives will be anchored.

He described the National Digital Development Policy as a strategic document that aligns with the government's Medium-Term National Development Plan (MTNDP 2019-2023) of building a digital economy and leveraging ICT to stimulate growth in all sectors of the economy.

Minister Swaray maintained that the Policy will further support Sierra Leone’s drive to be a globally competitive economy in the knowledge and information age.

He entreated his audience to carefully follow the expert presentation on the Policy and see how best they can make their inputs towards the overall validation process.

He profusely thanked his team at the Ministry of Information and assured all that they will continue to work towards ensuring that the Policy is actualized.

Speaking on behalf of Qcell, the Technical Lead, Emmanuel Williams, expressed his company's delight at the Ministry of Information including them in the validation process. He assured they are willing and ready to support the process.

The Director-General of the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), Daniel Kaitibie, called on participants to be attentive, carefully listen to the presentations and see how best they can make their contributions, comments, and recommendations in the best interest of the country.

He added that several consultations had been done with various stakeholders nationwide which stimulated the formation of the Policy. He expressed his institution's continued commitment to ensuring that Sierra Leone is digitally transformed to catch up with the rest of the world.

Speaking on behalf of Smart Africa, Dr. Ransford Mensa commended the Minister of Information and Communications and team for the premium placed on digital transformation in the country. He added that digital technology is a critical component in the world and Sierra Leone should take advantage of the opportunities set forth.

The Representative of Orange Sierra Leone, Joseph Momoh, described the workshop as timely, emphasizing that digital transformation is a must for Sierra Leone. He assured all of Orange Sierra Leone's continued support in working with the government through NATCOM and the Ministry of Information and Communications.
