Sierra Leone's President assures APRM Eminent Persons of African Democracy

The President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, who doubles as the current chairperson of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Forum of States, has assured the eminent persons of prioritizing the fight against the unconstitutional government in Africa.

During a courtesy call on His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, at the State House in Freetown, the President reaffirmed his commitments to the APRM Eminent Persons on terrorism and unconstitutional governments in the continent.

President Julius Maada Bio expressed how happy he was to be selected to serve as Chairperson of the African Peer Review Forum of Heads of State and Government by his colleagues, which he described as "a great initiative."

The President of Sierra Leone promised the APRM, the African Union, and his fellow Heads of State that he would serve as Chairperson of the APRM Forum of Heads of States and Governments with "humility and pride."

The Chairperson of the APRM forum of Heads of States and Government, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, urged the continent to use democracy as the only means to keep society peaceful, on the note that peace is important for development.

President Bio cheers the visiting eminent people to continue to take the APRM seriously as he seeks their support towards ensuring a more vibrant APRM.

While presenting proposals from the meeting with the ministers of eminence, Professor Eddy Maloka, while presenting proposals to President Bio, expressed appreciation to him for the warm reception accorded them.

Professor Maloka described the speech of the chairperson of the APRM forum of Heads of States at the 16th Extraordinary Session of the African Union in Malabo as amazing. Hence, it touches on turning issues on the continent, including terrorism and unconstitutional changes of government, which according to him, was well-received by other member countries.

The APRM Chief Executive Officer said, "Your Excellency, sir, I want to kindly request that APRM committees be established in the different countries to achieve APRM's latest strategy of 2020-2023 and to continue its drive for universal accession."

Professor Maloka also suggested the appointment of a special envoy who would visit and talk to countries yet to be members of the APRM, which he considered a move that would be to their great advantage, especially of the 55 AU member states, of which more than two-thirds have already been been acceded to the APRM.

The Minister of Political and Public Affairs, Ambassador Mohamed Foday Yumkella, who serves as the chairman of the steering committee and Focal Person, thanks to President Bio for approving the hosting of the congress of eminent persons in Sierra Leone. He described the Freetown technical training on the continental monitoring, evaluation, and reporting framework for member states as successful.

It could be recalled that the three-day Freetown hybrid meeting, a statutory meeting of the APRM, aims to set the agenda for the current chairpersons of the Forum of Heads of States for the next two years.

The APRM is a mutually agreed instrument that is voluntarily acceded to by the African Union Member States as an African self-monitoring mechanism. African Heads of State and Government adopted it as a systematic peer learning and self-assessment mechanism, originating from the NEPAD foundational document.
