Notwithstanding the government of Sierra Leone’s Free and Quality Education, access to education in some rural communities remain challenging. However, children in some of these pastoral communities are going to extraordinary lengths to come to school to attain an education.
In Pujehun, Save The Children captures 13-year-old Tenneh’s journey to class by rowing her boat downstream to attain her dream.
For Tenneh it is caught between the devil of illiteracy and rowing through the stream with no life jacket, however, she chooses the latter.
According to Save The Children IG post “Tenneh’s journey to class isn’t a typical one. She starts the day by crossing the river in her canoe, no matter what the weather brings.”
“When I am sitting in my boat on the way to school and the wind is blowing, I park the boat and wait for the wind to stop. Then I jump back into my boat quickly so I can get to school early.”
According to Save The Children, “We’re supporting schools in Sierra Leone so children can continue to learn and play— providing uniforms, books, and desks. Our teacher training program ensures that girls like Tenneh can stay in school and reach their potential.”
