Sierra Leone government encourages citizens to take the COVID vaccine

The government of Sierra Leone is calling on citizens and members of the public that are yet to be vaccinated to visit the centers and take their jabs before the expiration of the available vaccines in the country. They have been appealing for vaccines on behalf of the people, and there are presently four types of vaccines including Sinopharm, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer.

The government data from the ongoing vaccination exercises are encouraging but they are worried about a possible fourth wave, so they are appealing for more people to be vaccinated for fear of any impact on the nation.

The Communications Lead of the national response, National COVID-19 Emergency Response Center (NaCOVERC), Harold Thomas, says the available vaccines in the country are over 500,000. he says the evidence is overwhelming that no matter which one a person takes, the vaccines offer life-saving protection against the disease that has killed hundreds of thousands of people.

The country had revised its COVID-19 response plan aims to reach 20 percent of the 4.2 million eligible targeted population with the vaccine by the end of 2021, barely three months from now. A surge vaccination exercise was introduced on 23rd August, which saw the administration of about 165,000 doses to 35,000 persons, confirmed to had received their first and second doses respectively.

However, despite the government's appeal for more people to be vaccinated, they are recommending that the other public health measures are adhered to at all times even after receiving the shots.
