Gento is determined to restore Freetown’s lost glory

They say the hottest part of hell is meant for those who, in times of moral crisis, reserve their neutrality.

Sierra Leone’s renowned business tycoon, Mohamed Gento Kamara, has resolved not to sit atop an ivory tower and watch Freetown devolve deeper into moral degradation, but to take action to restore Freetown's lost glory. Therefore he decided to take off his work suit, fold his sleeves, and run for Mayor of Freetown.

According to Gento, "Freetown has degenerated to the lowest ebb of moral decadence; there is no longer respect for the elderly; profanity has become the norm. Freetown used to have values we enjoyed growing up."

He added, "We need to reverse engineer our psyche and bring back a mindset that would instil values that this beautiful city once had, and then move to the next step, which is to structurally develop Freetown as a modern city."

Gento said his message to all Sierra Leoneans is that his political venture is going to cut across party lines.

He revealed that serious political tensions existed between the All-People’s Congress (APC) and the SLPP in 2013 and 2014.

"I engaged the then President Ernest Bia Koroma. I told him that such tension was not healthy for the country. I advised him to have a dialogue with current President Maada Bio to settle their differences and calm tension among their supporters to keep the peace. Both heeded my advice and had an hour-long meeting, after which they applauded me for the initiative," he said.

After that meeting, unscrupulous individuals started creating bottlenecks on payments that should be made to my company, accusing me of financing President Maada Bio.

"I must say President Maada Bio and former President Ernest Koroma are very good men," Gento said. "The problems that leaders often face are the people that surround them. Most of those that surround them often do not mean well. They can be so selfish to the point that they do things that are detrimental to the state."
