Don’t despair, change is coming soon – Hon. Chernor Bah assures Sierra Leoneans

The leader of the Opposition in the Sierra Leone House of Parliament, Honourable Chernor M. Bah aka Chericoco has told this medium that Sierra Leoneans should not despair or be heartbroken because of what they are going through now in the country as change is on its way.

He said in the last four years the country, has been a living hell for the cost of living has been skyrocketing, human rights have been very bad, and day-to-day killing is another thing.

"Since we started practicing multi-party democracy in 1996, this is the worst time for Sierra Leoneans as they have lost all trust in the judiciary, the police, and the government that has been putting them on arm's sway and making life so difficult for them to the point that even getting one meal a day has become so difficult."

Hon. Chericoco averred that in all of this, Sierra Leoneans must have faith and hope to change the current system come June 2023 so that their dignity will be restored.

He said as an affirmation of their commitment to chart a new path for attaining inclusive and sustainable economic growth and development when the APC comes back into governance, they would make sure that the economy of the country is stabilized, human and democratic rights are also restored, and the people will have confidence in the judiciary and police that are there to protect them.

The Hon. Chernor Bah averred that the need to envision a long-term development trajectory for Sierra Leone is important as the country needs to revise and adapt its development agenda that has been missing for these four years. He said they will make sure that there will be ongoing structural transformations, increased peace and the elimination of tribalism, renewed economic growth, and social progress.

"The need for people-centered development, gender equality, and youth empowerment, as well as changing the country’s contexts such as increased globalization and the ICT revolution, the increased unity of the people will be very pivotal when we come back to the office next year." Emerging development and investment opportunities in areas such as agri-business, infrastructure development, health and education, and value addition in our commodities will be critical for the country to stabilize and develop more quickly.

He called on Sierra Leoneans to make sure that come September they go out and register to vote because it is only their votes that will emancipate them from the slavery they are going through. He stated that if people come out in large numbers to register, especially in the Western Area, North and Northwest, the world will see how useless the census results will be.

Don’t be intimidated and make sure you sacrifice a day to register because that vote of yours is going to free us all from this economic and human rights decadence in the country. I say to all of you: continue to obey the law; continue to do what is right, and make sure that you do not fall foul of the law. We do not want any unrest in the country. It is better to sleep peacefully at night even when you don’t have to eat than to live under fear even when you have plenty to eat. "

He stated that they will continue to fight the census and Proportional Representation (PR) because they do not meet the requirements of the constitution and are not supported by the people. He called on all opposition MPs and chiefs to put their people and their conscience first rather than support bad laws that the government is trying to impose on the people.
